Lord of the Rings Beginner’s Tailoring Guide

woodcrafting

Lord of the Rings Online players do not need to take up the path of the metalsmith, the prospecter, or the jeweler.   They do not even have to learn a trade skill at all, if they do not desire to do so, but some players find the appeal of taking up a needle and thread to hard to resists.  The steps in this guide will help a resident of Middle Earth get started in his tailoring career.  This long journey that is quite interesting in its own way starts with a trip to the Master or Mistress of Apprentices.

Items Needed for a LOTRO Tailor

No craftsman can get started without his tools.  Sometimes even other skills are needed to gather the needed materials.  Woodcrafters and tailors occasionally need to rely on the services of a forester to boil hides.    A tailor can collect hobbit children to gather hides, or he can collect them on his own.  The hides must be boiled and tanned before they can be used.  (Special NPCs must be used for the tanning process.)

What the Apprentice Tailor Can Make

The apprentice tailor can make neophyte armor which can be sold, used, or given to someone in need who does not want to bother with twinking his character with better items.  (Such players of mmorpgs become.)   This armor may not be the best armor available in the game, but it is good enough to protect the characters from the many blows that he or she might receive during the early parts of his adventuring career.

Items to Make to Advance to Tier 2 Tailoring in LOTRO

The player will start out by making rough cloth armor.  This recipes are bought from the master or mistress of apprentices.  The trade skill interface in Lord of the Rings Online lets the player knows what items he needs to make it.  Each initial item results in 6 tier points.  When the player reaches 200 tier points in tailoring, he can go back to the Master of Apprentices to find out if he’s ready to advance in his career.  The item progression is as follows:

Leather Bindings
Rough Cloth
Padded Cloth
Heavy Cloth

For reasons known only to the game designers, tailors do not need thread in the early recipes for this trade skill.   The good news is know that a player knows the basics for the tailoring skill in Lord of the Rings Online, he can make fine robes for Rune keepers, scholars, and for everyone else for those special events that require a player to bring wear the best clothing they possess.

UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity – 2008 URL: www.unesco.org Description: The Zafimaniry community is the sole remaining repository of a unique woodcraft culture previously widespread on the island. In the eighteenth century, the Zafimaniry settled in the remote wooded region of south-east Madagascar, seeking refuge from the deforestation that was ravaging much of Madagascar at that time. Today, approximately 25000 Zafimaniry live in some one hundred villages and hamlets scattered in the highlands of this region. For generations, Zafimaniry foresters, carpenters and craftworkers have developed a body of practical knowledge and skills revolving around wood. This craft tradition bears witness to the central role of this material in all aspects of life and death. Zafimaniry proficiency in forestry and wood sculpting can be seen in constructions and everyday objects. Practically all wooden surfaces walls, window frames, posts, beams, stools, chests, tools display elaborate ornamentation. The Zafimaniry use twenty different endemic species of tree, each adapted to a specific type of construction or decorative function.
