How Mathis Brothers Furniture Remained Unbeaten Since 1955
Providing furniture for the multitude of homeowners residing in the state of Oklahoma has always been the biggest priority of Mathis Brothers Furniture, this company is highly specialized in the distribution, retailing and manufacturing of home and office furnishings. They have begun operations since 1955, and for more than 50 years running, the business is still very active to this very day. It is all because of two brothers named Don and Bud Mathis, the founders and owners of the premiere Oklahoman furniture legacy.
Thanks to this two amazing brothers, a once small idea has blossomed into a full grown entity that has made huge waves all over their hometown, but before the company became a trademark in their community, Don and Bud admits that they had their own fair share of perseverance and hard work before they finally opened the business for the public.
Throughout the years, Mathis Brothers worked hard and pushed themselves to the limit just like any other entrepreneurs would do, they immersed their time and effort into making sure that everything is running seamlessly. For years, they been successful in every endeavor, they gain more and more loyal consumers on their store awaiting their new releases and arrivals from the large archive of furniture they offer. But even if everything was great for the two, Bud have come to a realization that he wants to pursue another career, he wanted to embark on other business opportunities that are outside his norms. Because of that, he immediately asked his brother for permission to take over the company solely once he leaves, and Don as an understanding brother granted Bud’s request.
Many people actually thought that the Mathis Brothers Furniture would soon close for Don is the only person running it entirely, but many were surprised at the turnout of the business even after Bud had left. It is because in the year 1998, the company was bought entirely from Don by no other than his two sons named Bill and Larry, these two are the reason why the company bounced back even higher, and it was their idea to promote the “Everyday Low Prices” in their products. Because of the two younger-generations of Mathis brothers, the family legacy continued to remain strong, unbeaten and unstoppable in their goals – and that is to become the ultimate furniture shop not just in Oklahoma but also in many other parts of the country.

Roles And Responsibilities of Family Members

Family members must live together in peace and harmony. To achieve this, each member of the family must be aware of the duties and responsibilities expected of him. He should be able to do his work and at the same time be willing to do it. The distribution of household chores depends on the age, sex, and health of every member.
The father is the breadwinner and chief provider of the family. He makes the major family decisions together with mother and with the help of other members. This is the traditional role of the father. Today, this role has been changed as to include other responsibilities. Aside from being a breadwinner, he also participates actively in managing the household and helps caring for the children like bringing them to school, attending school meetings, and shopping with them. He does gardening, do home repairs, and even help mother marketing and preparation of family meals.
The mother is the manager and treasurer of the family. She supervises and coordinates the household tasks, takes care of the children, prepares the family budget, plans and prepares the family meals. Today, mothers also help earn a living to increase the family income.
The girls help the mother in doing the household chores. These include dusting and sweeping, preparing the meals, setting and clearing the table, doing errands, and going to the market with mother. The older girls attend to additional shores, like washing, ironing clothes and taking care of younger brothers and sisters.
The boys are usually assigned the heavy work in the house. This includes scrubbing the floor, fetching water, planting and watering the plants, cleaning the yard, and doing errands. Carpentry work is assigned to older boys who can help father in making repairs in the house.
Nowadays, father and mother, as well as girls and boys in the family, share in almost all the house works. There are times that girls do the gardening while boys help in cooking and taking care of younger brothers and sisters. There are times when father takes care of the house while mother has to do some work outside the house.
The home activities of one family may differ from those of other families. The difference may depend on the size and income of the family. Big families mean more members to share the household chores. Families with big income can afford to hire outside help who can do most of the household task. Families with small income have to distribute the household task among members.
A schedule of homemaking tasks is an effective tool that will ensure participation of the family members in household task during their free time. The schedule is also a reminder for every member on what they are expected to do and accomplish at home every day. The schedule should be flexible. It can also include the date when the work is to be done by members to avoid confusion.
Performing the roles expected of each member can lead to family harmony and happiness. Each member must also be considerate, helpful, and respectful toward each other. Each member must also be aware that he is different from other in terms of character traits, intelligence, and physical strength. Recognizing these differences help the family members understand one another.

Who Needs a White Card In Australia?

Australia-wide any person wanting to enter the construction industry must complete a general Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) induction course, before they can commence work. This includes construction activities such as housing, civil, renovations, repairs, refurbishment, carpentry, asbestos removal, bricklaying, plumbing, concreting, floor, roof and wall tiling. To receive a White Card you undertake the OHS induction course and are provided with a White Card as proof of completion.
The need to undergo OHS induction within the construction industry has been part of recent reforms to national occupational health and safety systems, in attempts to homogenise OHS across all states and territories. As such construction induction cards completed in all states and territories are recognised nation-wide.
About the ‘Work Safely in the Construction Industry’ OHS Induction Course:
The OHS induction course, which results in a White Card, is called ‘Work Safely in the Construction Industry’ and relates directly to the general induction training program specified by the National Code of Practice for Induction Training for Construction Work. The unit supports the attainment of basic OHS knowledge that you will require before undertaking any designated work within the construction industry.
All Australian states and territories have agreed to implement the National Code of Practice for Induction Training for Construction Work, meaning you’ll be recognised across the board for having completed the ‘Work Safely in the Construction Industry’ course. As a national program, the state or territory of course completion does not matter – if you live in QLD and undertake the OHS induction course in Queensland then move for example to NSW, you’re able to commence work in New South Wales.
The ‘Work Safely in the Construction Industry’ OHS induction course is very thorough, detailing OHS legislative requirements, duty of care requirements, safe work practices, risk management, common hazards, communication processes, designated OHS personnel, relevant authorities, general procedures for emergency situations and personal protective equipment. As such it is a competency based course, and requires the successful completion of assessment items.
Upon your successful completion of the ‘Work Safely in the Construction Industry’ OHS induction course you will receive a laminated White Card with a serial number and the date you undertook the course, and a certificate of completion. Both of which act as proof of completion at the workplace.
In order to receive the White Card and certificate of completion upon completion of the OHS induction course, you’re also required to present a copy of your Statement of Attainment certificate, which is available to you upon completion of the course, a Statutory Declaration form, signed by you, a witness and a Justice of the Peace (JP), legal practitioner or Commissioner for Declaration (C.Dec) and a copy of your photo ID, which also needs to be signed by the JP or C.Dec.
Keeping It Together in Carpentry
Article by Joanna Harris
In carpentry, the strength and stability of any structure depend largely on what’s keeping everything together. And what keep things together in carpentry are essentially called “fasteners”. They are what join individual parts to form one structure or a finished product of carpentry.
The primary advantage of using wood as a structural material in carpentry is the ease with which wood structural parts can be joined together with a wide variety of fasteners such as nails, spikes, screws, bolts, pins, staples and connectors of various types. Usually they all are made of metal, and most of all of iron.
For maximum rigidity and strength, each type of fastener calls for joint designs specifically adapted to the strength properties of wood being used and to dimensional changes that could occur with changes in moisture content (that is, unavoidable weather conditions) and wear and tear.
The following are the three most popular forms of fasteners in carpentry.
NailsNails are the most commonly used fasteners in construction. They are the carpenter’s most useful means of fastening structural parts. As such, a great variety of types and sizes is available to meet the demands of the carpentry industry. Size is crucial in selecting the right nails for the job. Diameter would be the first consideration. Short, thick nails typically loose quickly, whereas long, thin nails are more likely to break at the joints of the lumber. Basic rule is to use as long and as thin nail as will drive easily.
Some tips in determining which nail size is appropriate:
- For lumber of medium hardness, the penny (head) of the nail should not be greater than the thickness of the board into which the nail is being driven. – Nails should be one penny smaller if used in hard woods.- When joining two boards together, the nail point should at least penetrate 1/4 inch of the far side of the second board. – The kind of wood is an essential factor in determining the size of nail as well. Soft woods may require nails that may be one penny larger, or sometimes, even two pennies larger.
However, all rules and tips are worth pennies compared to experience, as it is still the best guide in determining the appropriate nail size.
ScrewsWood screws are excellent alternatives to nails as carpentry fasteners.
They have worthwhile advantages over nails because they are sturdier. Also, it gives the carpenter more flexibility in adjusting the structure because of the ease in disassembling the joined parts. Just a twist with a screwdriver and it’s off! Unlike with nails, it is quite possible to damage the structure if it’s already been nailed together and you want to take it off. These advantages, however, also come at a cost since it takes more time and effort to install screws to structural materials than nails. With nails, you just need a hammer and just pound away. Screws are more tedious because of the need for more precision.
In the early days, most wood screws (probably 75 percent or more) used to be the flat-head type. This has changed however, with the emergence of the Phillips head screw in recent years.
BoltsAn alternative to both nails and screws are called bolts. These are used to bind parts tightly together where high strength is needed. A bolt is generally regarded as a rod having a head at one end and a threaded portion on the other to receive a nut. The nut is usually considered as forming a part of the bolt. These fasteners are as essential to carpentry as the structural materials itself. Without them to hold parts together, functionality of the structure would be greatly compromised.
